I HAD two Kribensis in my tank. A few months ago, the female died. The male became more reclusive that he was before, even though he didn't hang out much with the female.

When upgraded to much brighter LED lights, the male decided to stay hidden most of the time. When I fed the fish, he would only come out to eat after I tossed the food in and walked a good distance away.

Well, on Friday I went out and bought a new Kribensis. It's now 2 days later and the two of them are inseparable. The two come out together and swim the whole tank together. He still gets a little spooked when I come close to the tank. She seems OK with me. But at least I see them out and about when I am sitting on the couch and staring at the aquarium.

Glad I made the little guy happy.

What other community friendly cichlids can I toss in there?

Another krib, possibly, but without knowing the size of the tank, what else is in there, no way to know for sure. Keep in mind that anything added will be at risk if they pair up and decide to breed.

I agree, wait a while before adding any more cichlids. Those two just may breed and you could have dozens of fry to deal with.
I had good luck breeding Kribs when I kept them.

I loved our kribs! Our pair bred often & a few fry would survive even in a community tank. But that did lead to overcrowding eventually & difficulties selling or even giving them away.

Festivums are pretty mellow if your tank is, say, a 55g. But I'd wait to see how this new krib pair works out.

Agreed, Festivum would be good, as well as Keyholes, Curviceps, various Aquidens, Burjurquina, and many other mild mannered cichlids.

After 2 weeks, both Kribensis have died. I found the half eaten body of the female and pulled it out and flushed it. I can't find the male's body anywhere in the tank.

Everybody else appears healthy, so I am not sure what happened there.

I'm sorry they died. I try to do a few large water changes after unexplained fish deaths & wait a good while before adding new fish.

Did you look behind & under the stand for the male?

I did. Couldn't find him anywhere. No adding any new fish for a month.

My plants are kinda growing out of control with the new lights I got, so I need to do some trimming and rescaping over the next few days.

I'm so sorry my kribs breed and I have 8 fry all about a inch in a 90 gallon with sump the other cichlids I have in there are a festvium a uaru a keyhole and angel fish all do good!
