I'm hoping they'll take care of the fry. I don't really have a place to set up growout tanks right now, so for now the fry will basically be feeders. I have several other cichlid species that I'm hoping to breed a couple years down the road though, so I will probably eventually start keeping the fry.

I went out after work yesterday and got one petricola, and when I got home from picking him up, I found that the Fluval had been delivered, so I hooked it up and threw in a little cycled media from my other tank. The new Syno hasn't come out of hiding yet and he's pretty small. I think I might pick up another 1 or 2
 
Buy 2 more, Andy! IMO, petricolas do better having at least a trio.

That's what I thought I'd read somewhere before when I was considering them a few years ago. I just got enough birthday money for two more, so they'll be added this week

Oh I know. I had my Syno. nigrita in with my brichardi pair and I still had probably over 300 fry make it to 1" or so (of course then he was about 1.5", now that he's a 6" fat monster it would probably be a different story-it's pretty cool to think that I've had him since I got back into fishkeeping in high school and just went through his 4th tank upgrade 20->55->75->150). My CA cichlids and turtles got a LOT of feeders that few months I had that pair (before the female suddenly killed the male). If I end up with more fry than I know what to do with, they'll just be oscar or turtle snacks
 
wow it took yours that long to grow? in a year my syno cat went from 2inch to 7. he was a beast, i miss him.

I don't think he has grown very much in several years. It took him probably 2 years to reach almost the size he is now, but I've had him for about 6 years.

I got two more Synos today. I didn't really notice until I got home, but they look a little bit different than the one I got a couple days ago. They're all tiny though, so time will tell whether they're really petricola or not
