my family purchased some birds from this store when i was a kid, but i hadn't been in there for years until yesterday... their fish room is HUGE!!! the tanks were well-kept, clean, spacious, not crowded, and precisely labeled, including the pH and temperatures required by the fish in each individual tank. the fish were happy, healthy, active, and beautiful. there were no dead fish to be seen in "for sale" tanks, and many tanks were marked "not for sale until xx/xx", suggesting that they actually quarantine their fish and don't sell them till they're okayed! sick tanks were kept in the back of the room, in a roped-off area, as well. the selection is huge, both for SW & FW, and the guy in the fish room was very attentive and helpful (even after i told him i wasn't buying.)

if they actually had any of the fish i wanted for this tank, i'd be there in a heartbeat ^_^

Fish.com (Dog.com) Outlet Store

Hazle Township, Pa. 18202
The PetsUnited retail outlet is located just off state Route 924 on Maplewood Drive in Hazleton, Pa. Call the store at 1-570-384-5555, ext. 156.
Hours M-F 9-6, Sat 9-5 (I think- will check on my way to work)

This store is basically in my backyard. No livestock but great deals on dry good-but it is limited in what they carry and stock varies day to day. It is worth the stop if you find yourself traveling on I-81 in northeastern PA. I got a new in box Magnum 350 canister filter for $40 on clearance at this place. Not a thing wrong with the filter. Their price on Penguins (which they carry most of the time) is great too. Also they always have the 160g Instant Ocean for $35 -not bad.
Captain Nemos is an awesome store. Very good prices on everything in the store and they know there trade. Get on there mailing list because they give about 4 great sales a year.

wow, this thread is so long it's become a directory!

best place i know of, although they are a smaller store and have limited stock, dry goods wise, is Aquarium Enthusiasts in Edmonton, Alberta. Wagner Road and 75th Street. (780) 469-FISH. best part is my daytime workjob is just around the corner! nice selection of saltwater and most of the freshwater is community types. every living creature in my tanks is from there, except for the snails. great staff, and the manager will tell you what you can and can't put in your tank, even if it means losing a sale.

Absolutely Fish & Pet Shanty has also been mentioned, but I have a few personal ideas about each place I wanted to add. Absolutely Fish caters to people who want beautiful, showy tanks. I didn't see a single fish that's remotely drab in color, or any larger fish that were sold-back. I also didn't see any of the more exotic, oddball fish. They have excellent varieties in types of discus and cichlids and such, but absolutely none of the higher maintanance fish, larger catfish, etc. Their staff is really helpful and nice.

Pet Shanty is really great, too. A lot more diversity in different types of fish, and you can always find an oddball or two lurking in the corners - definitely a great place. The guys there are helpful, and have always tried to stock the fish I was looking for. Very convenient.

I went to Pet Shanty today, specifically looking for a dwarf puffer and some corys. One of their three dwarf puffers was already dead (and for awhile too as it has been picked apart pretty good), and the other two had considerable damage to their fins... they looked like they were in bad shape. I was really surprised at the small selection of corys as well. After reading about their large selection of fish, and the things said in this thread, I was really disappointed. The tanks were clean and they had a lot of fish.. however I would never buy any. So many fish had so much damage to their fins. There were a few I wish I could have "rescued."
I don't know anything about saltwater tanks, but those fish all looked alright and had plenty of room.

Any other recommendations for New Jersey, preferably South Jersey??? I live outside Atlantic City and there is only one shop there.

having been there now, i can say that the other all-pet discount, in Red Mill Commons off of Nimmo Parkway, is just as awesome.
