light cycle

Light is classed as a nutrient, and too much of a nutrient will cause undesirable algae to grow. The light matters not for the fish...

Thats not exactly true. The second my lights turn off on my SW my clowns swim to their little cave and sleep.

Fish do not need lighting, and it actually makes no odds, as long as they do effectivly get a dusk / dawn cycle...and believe me, your fish wont go to sleep as soon as you turn off the lights.. :)

Then what do you call it when they go straight to their cave and swim in place for 13 hrs? Sleeping.

my actinics are on 12 hours, daylights on 10 hours. fuge light is on an opposite cycle from the actinics.

It's normal for fish to go hide immediately after the light is out. It's not necessary to sleep, but it's survival instinct to avoid nocturnal predator they cannot be on the look out for. And when you talk about "sleep", it's not like how it is for human, or even mammals. Far less percentage of their brain goes to rest than it is for humans, therefore it is not NEARLY as important as it is for us when you talk about general health. Fish in the wild get as much "true rest" as they are allowed to by surrounding environment.

Ya thats what I mean. They are not "Asleep" per say because they move really quick when I approach but the are resting.

The lights are on because they are our only room light at night and they go on at 8AM for feeding. I could probably, certainly, reduce them, or run them in two cycles as we stay up late. And yes the power bill is ridiculous ($350), but not all because of the tank. I mainly was just pointing out that long ON time doesn't seem to phase the fish.

The clean up crew on the other hand.. Probably doesn't like it as they come pouring out after dark. 20 minutes after dark there are literally millions of creatures out covering everything. That's worms, a large cowry,(I thought was dead for 4 years but saw him the other night), pods of all different models. Tubular worms, bristle worms, royal worms, small shrimp and things that look like springs that screw thru the water. Snap on a flashlight and it's bedlam. The YTang turns off his color and just appears to have a bright white stripe running down his sides.
