LIVE ROCK FILTER???

Would anyone be able too help me out ? I have a 75 gal. with a wet/dry, can't stand the bio-balls. I'vd like to remove them & put live rock in it's chamber instead. This IS new for me ya know & hoping someone could give me some tips. On the 75 gal. there are a total of (3) filters, the wet/dry like I said & the biggest canister filter that Fuvual has, Also a Emperor, the size with the (2) Bio-wheels. tank has been running now for about 3 weeks or so. I also have 4 inches of marine sand ,a UV light & a protien skimmer...Like I SAID "Can anyone help me out with some tips on to making my system better???:help: Thanks, Dee
 
you can definately and prob should take out the bio balls and replace them with live rock rubble. The bio balls can collect debris and that in turn will create more nitrates in your tank from the die off. Unless you are faithfully cleaning your bioballs & about half at a time to get the beneficial bacteria around instead of washing it all away with each cleaning...the live rock rubble would be more beneficial.
Also throw some chaeto (your LFS could get you some most likely for free) in the Emperor filter and put some light over it to keep it alive and promote growth...this will also help with the nitrates in your tank.
 
Thanks for the info, I'll do just that.......We'll keep in touch ....As far as the canister filter, I have the 2 long sponges & in the 4 boxes there are all the bio-max things, is that ok???
 
no clue. I have never dealt with the canister style filters with success. I have a jebo for about ten minutes...that went bad and i had almost 30 gal of water on my floor so I am sticking with the HOB for good now lol
 
It depends what kind of a tank you have.

Heavily stocked FO or FOWLR? Keep the bio-balls and add the LR to your sump, refuge, or DT instead.

Lightly-stocked reef tank? Get rid of the bio-balls and put LR everywhere you can, within reason.

Just my opinion.
