Live Rock Questions

For the rock thing:

Use that rock for 'base rock' in your tank, and then go to the petstore and buy another 30 lbs of live rock. This will seed your base rock and it'll all be live again sometime soon.

This is what I did with my 55g:

35 lbs of base rock i bought from somebody's basement (sound familiar?)
45 lbs of live fiji cured rock from petco (they sold it to me for pennies, really)
40 lbs of live substrate (arag-live or whatever)
salt

2 weeks my tank was fully cycled. Seriously. How sweet was that?

Here's a link to my fishy photo album, if you want an idea of another freshly setup 55g :) :

Thanks again. Great help. I'm going to add that as base rock and then i'll buy 25-35 pounds of live rock from a local pet store. It's 6.99 at the place in town. It's a fun hobby but expense is part of it too i guess.

Another question(sorry guys) ... while I'm in Italy, my house is right by the beach in Napoli (best beaches in Italy IMO) ... if I see any Rock or Drift Wood laying around can I bring that home and put that in my tank as well? If I do what do I have to do to clean it? And what precautions do I take to make sure I'm not endangering my Tank? Thanks again.

this is just a personal preference of mine, but i would not put anything in my tank from a beach..you dont know whats been on it, in it or around it..I just would not have risk of something happening...Things that are on or about the beach may have been in contact with all manner of chemicals before it landed where it is...

The choice is yours really..drift wood is a major no no in my opinion...Suppose if you wanted to use shells or stone, then minimum boil them...

my 2p worth...

Beach driftwood lowered my ph slightly yrs ago atnixon hit that right on the nail.
I got it from Miami beach as it had lots live barnacles attached to it and neat worms, etc.
You can shells, etc just rinse them off in hot water . Neat to catch small inverts to from the beach .

I agree with the article if you dont vacuum it but I do weekly . Granted its a bit of a hassle and I am only 5ft 2 inches lol so I stand on a wooden box thats a foot high and 4 feet long to do it . My tank is a 55 gallon thank goodness I dont have a 90 gallon or would need mountain climbing gear lol .

I tried sand initially and didnt like it as I had algae problems due to junk in the sand and I dont like the look of deep sand beds just a thin layer so siphoned it out and added crushed coral things have been great since than but I know most prefer sand and prefer not to vaccum weekly if at all.

thanks

You take down all your rock work and decoration to vac the CC. WOW thats dedication.

have to admit, moving all the rock to clean the gravel has gotta be stressfull to fish, their enviroment and territory always changing..but, if you do that every week then i take my hat off to you for the good effort...
