hi everyone, i wanted to add live rock to my FO aquarium, does live rock need special lighting. i only have two 30 inch strip lights with 50/50 actinic bulbs at 6000k on it. i have a 125 gallon tank with CY194 wet to dry filter with built in skimmer, 2 inch aragonite dead sand bed. what do i need to keep a live rock? Thanks in advance. i find this site very informative and ill be spending a lot of time reading the threads.

Calcium.. basically LR is called that because of the bacteria and coraline on it. I keep 50lbs under 2 48" 50/50 NO bulbs. most my coraline died off because lack of calcium. High light helps but you can get by most likely.

Actually, too bright of light will kill purple algae. Definately add calcium and alk to your tank but not unless you test your cal. and alk. levels first.

It's my understanding that the purple corraline grows in shaded areas. My purple grows under the lr. I do have the bright red corraline that is showing up on the tops of my rocks with mh.

how do u ad calcium?
is it in a bottle?
thanks...

is it true that using aragonite rocks and sand automatically buffers your calcium to good levels? I read this on the carib-sea website.

Nope, Calium Carbonate only dissolves at low PH levels, hence some buffering does happen, but nothing major. Essentially anything that is using Calcium will deplete any thats present long before it gets replaced by Calcium Carbonate rocks/sand (which is what Aragonite and Tuffa Rock is)
