In Cheyenne, once a year, they hold Cheyenne Frontier Days. It's basically 10 days of rodeo, concerts, carnival, and oh yeah, people. Literally hundreds of thousands of people descend on this town of about 50,000. It's a madhouse. Roads are congested, the annual murder usually takes place during these 10 days, and doing anything, from shopping to filling up the gas tank, becomes a major hassle. The entire town is turned over to this--signs everywhere, parking and shuttle lots, 'specials' just for the occasion--even the restaurants get into it, and all the waiters end up looking like misplaced cowboys.

I try to go elsewhere during this time. While I'm sure it's loads of fun for the people coming into town, it's just a headache for me. Anyone have anything similar in their area?

Roswell has a combined 4th of July/UFO Festival. Usually about 3 or 4 days. Concerts, UFO film festivals, appearances by sci-fi series cast members, alien costume contest, "alien chase" footraces, parade, fireworks, etc. The biggest turnout was in 1997 (50th anniversary of the "Roswell Incident"). Not quite the turnout that you get in Cheyenne, I'm sure. But still a lot of people in a town of about 45,000.

We usually get out of town, but this year we stayed and had some fun with it. Our favorite was an "oldies" concert featuring the Drifters, the Platters and the Temptations.

I think it would be easier if it were year round--at least you could get used to it. I'm still surprised by the number of visitors that decide making a left hand turn from the far right lane is just fine...Or ignore which direction the one way street is going...Or the 'cowboy' that has his jeans tucked into his boots...Or the women who think that a bright turquoise halter top, daisy dukes, boots with knee-high socks, and a white cowboy hat looks good on every body...Or any of the other hundred annoying things.

Yeah, yeah, I'm just whining. :)

Sensei--I had a college chum that grew up in Roswell--he too made every effort to get out of town for the festival. I can imagine how crazy it is!

OG,

Nearly as fun as the July 4th/UFO Festival is the Eastern New Mexico State Fair. The parade that kicks off the fair seems to feature every tractor and fire truck within a 150 mile radius! Boy, if that ain't exciting!!!

Cearbhaill,

Didn't I hear recently that they're thinking of changing Florida's nickname to the Blue Hair State. :p

Montreal's got so many...

Some of my favorites include:

- Jazz festival (just finished)
- Just for laughs (which is on right now)
- Beer fest :)
- Formula 1 grand prix
- international fireworks competition
- music festival

We tend to steer really clear of any Mercury Grand Marquis or Lincoln Town Cars on the road.

I have to agree with you. It seems that all of them drive through Jacksonville to get to Orlando and South Florida. It drives me nuts.

Well, my hometown (N. Conway, NH) has about 3X more tourists (about 25,000 people... about 8,000 residents. No joke.) than permanent residents. It's a resort/ski area, so all winter long (including late fall and early spring) the area is jam packed with skiiers and vacationers. We are also known for our leaf season, so during fall, you have to plan about 40 minutes extra of driving time to get from one side of town to the other because all of the "leafpeepers" are driving slow to look at the scenery or just generally don't have a clue where they are going. In the summer, its a little bit calmer, but all of the resorts attract a lot of people. We also seem to be the vacation reservoir for Mass and Canada.

In fall, though, there is a huge regional Fair in Fryeburg, Me. Traffic then is outrageous (smallish towns means only one or two roads that will lead you there and they go straight through the center of town).
