Australia is a bloody big island, the same size as continental USA. The island continent.
5 mainland states and one large territory, plus the island state of Tasmainia in the south. Western Australia is about four times the size of Texas. Its population is probably only 2 million.
British took the land from the aborigines 200 yrs ago. The aborigines have 40,000years unbroken history.....apart from some atrocities which I won't go into here.
The north, above the Tropic of Capricorn, is monsoonal. The Great Dividing Range, only 7,000 ft, runs from Cape York in the Nth East, pretty well parallel with the east coast down through Brisbane, capital of Queensland state, to Sydney, our largest pop and capital of New South Wales, past Canberra, Aust Capital and down around to Melbourne, capital of Victoria state. I live 3 hours nth. Dry farm land.
West of the mountain range, which is most of the country, is flat with numerous deserts. Soul lives in Alice Springs which is right in the middle of the country.
Our nearest neighbours are Papua New Guinea and Indonesia to the north. Indonesia is an archipeligo of 400,000,000 mostly muslim people. Australia's pop is 19 million.
We sell massive amounts of coal and iron ore to other countries to make into things which we then buy. The greenhouse gas emmissions from the use of the ore we sell has meant the south of Aust, where I live, is in a permanent el nino pattern. 11yrs drought, which makes growing grains to make food, difficult. Things now won't recover irrespective of the amount of rain that falls.
We're a US ally. I have a friend in Iraq. Culturally we're a lot like USA, but maybe more English Canadian. No guns here. Lots of uranium which others want.
If you fly south west from LA you end up in Sydney. It's now 1pm.
