Looking for a tankmate

I would say no shellies until the upgrade. If your juli's are a pair expect fry soon...

No, I don't believe the juli's are a pair. One of them hangs out in the tufa and the other hangs out with the syno, in and around his cave. I thought that was very odd!

What about adding a couple more transcriptus if I can get them?

Here's a picture that I just took that shows the additional tufa I just added today and all three of the fish in the tank. Notice how one transcriptus is in the tufa and the other is right out by the syno. Is there a reason for this?

yep i would add a couple more transcript's i have 5 of them in my 55gal shellie and you may end up with a pair as well, i have a pair and they have been doing the mating ritual dance so i should have fry soon..

Once the pair breeds I would try to remove the rest if possible. Believe me, a juli pair with fry does not want anything in their way...

hey jpappy well the juli pair has taken hold of the middle of my 55gal and pushed the rest of the juli's to the sides so as to not be a bad fish owner i am removing the other 3 plus i dont want to see them hiding out on the sides sorta makes me feel bad but i do have a 20gal going right now with a sign saying needs residents..

hey shmagu if you want to add more transcript's i would try to find some that are bigger and see if you come up with a pair, probably the reason they are staying separate because you may have two males one side is mine type of issue also if you want to add something a little different i would add a altolamprologus compressiceps or a altolamprologus calvus on the beefy size so that they could handle themselves in this setup and i would only add one like a black calvus or you could add a gold head comp..

I'm going to pick up a 55-gallon this weekend and hope to start cycling Monday at the latest.

Anyways, I'll eventually be moving my synodontis and the two transcriptus out of the 20-long and into the 55g. Let me know if you think this would work:

current synodontis
current transcriptus (2)

plus:

Julidochromis transcriptus (2)
Neolamprologus brevis (4)
Cyprichromis leptosoma (10)
Synodontis petricola (2)

Any thoughts or ideas?

Also thinking about using the 20-long as a community tank with corys, tetras, etc.

i would say go for it my friend, sounds nice, just a reminder cyps are a flight risk so make sure all holes are plugged if not they will find that 2 inch hole and jump right out of it, hehehe, that 20gal community sounds sweet i have a 20gal with 3 rainbowfish in it, later buddy..

I went out and got a synodontis eupterus for my 20-long today. He will be making the move into the 55 whenever it's ready.

Which brings me to this......

Here's what I'm thinking for the 55 substrate. Put down a layer of CaribSea African Cichlid Mix and then on top of that put a layer of 50/50 CaribSea Aragonite Puka Shell and pool filter sand. Rockwork will be tufa. Any ideas if this would be ok or what else I could do with these subsrates?

Also, what fish would be recommended to go with transcriptus (5), synodontis (2), and multis (5) in this setting?

The Synodontis longirostris you have is going to get too big for the 55g. Also not to be the bearer of bad news but the synodontis eupterus you just got is going to get big I had five that were all well over 8in two were almost 10in. If you go with five Synodontis I would recommend five Synodontis petricola or multipunctatus. Multipunctatus are schooling Synos and should be kept in groups of three to five.....a fun active syno.

Guess I'll deal with those when the time comes. Also, I wasn't looking to add any more synos (unless I end up getting rid of the two I have once they outgrow the 55). When that happens, then I'll definitely look into the multipunctatus. The multis I had listed are shelldwellers.
