Looking for a tankmate

I'm looking to add either Altolamprologus calvus or Melanotaenia praecox to the Julidochromis transcriptus and Lamprologus multifasciatus.

Of these two, which would be best?

hey buddy sorry i havent been here in a bit i've been on a 3 day drunken stuper hehehe love vacations and cold weather wow its like the bon fires i've built here in the last 3 days have seemed to be much for me and the guinness, ok so i am sober now..

ok alto's and shellies will only work til the alto's reach a larger size then will seek out your shellies and devour them, i love the praecox route cool topwater action fo sure..

sorry about that misinfo on the cyps, what i should have said is that cool the cyps will look and do nice in that 55gal, i wasnt saying the 20gal, i wouldnt recommend 1 cyp in a 20gal..

as for the guppies and pleco, i would let them cycle your new setup but get rid of them when its time for the tangs to move in, syno's and pleco's dont mesh well together one will harass the other, i had a sailfin pleco in with my 2 eupterus and i had to take the sailfin back as for he was a terror pretty aggressive for a pleco..

BTW sweet on the 55gal buddy let me know how it turns out aye..

I already got rid of all the guppies. My girlfriend took them all. That was kinda my plan for the pleco. Let him hang out in the 55 until it was cycled and ready for the tangs and then either give him to my girlfriend or the lfs. I'm looking to put all the fish in at the same time, but I have to order the transcriptus and the shellies. I can get the rainbows at the lfs. I'm planning on having 5 each of the transcriptus and shellies. How many rainbows should I get and any certain m:f ratio?

Planned stocking
5 Julidochromis transcriptus

2 Synodontis
? Melanotaenia praecox

Should I go with 4 (3f:1m) or 6 (4f:2m) praecox?

I have 24 shells that should be delivered tomorrow. Six each Gold Mouth Turbos, Japanese Snail, Silver Mouth Turbo, and Whale Eye. Should I put all of these in for the lamp. multis? What, if anything, needs to be done before the shells go into the tank (boiling, etc.)?

tank specifics sound good.

stock list is sweet.

man i would go with about 10 preacox if possible i wouldnt worry much about the m/f ratio with them as long as you have a group of 6 or more they will be fine and shouldnt be timid

hey i forgot about the shell question, like when i bought my shells from a pet shop or a hobby shop all i did was rinse them off and my escargot shells which is the majority of my shells were bought with the escargot still inside so i plucked these little boogers out and i boiled the shells and let them set outside for a week, but it never hurts to boil any shell you get to be on the safe side, its your call on the shells aye.. the more the better or if you want to do about 3 shells per fish ratio, i have at least if i can recall about 5 shells per fish and i still have alot left over because i keep buying escargot shells and eating the boogers out of them which are tasty aye, hehehe, sorry if i grossed you out aye..

you could add all at the same time shouldnt hurt anything

Stocking looks good, but I would advise you to keep an eye out on the julies. Once a pair forms the others should be removed so they aren't harassed to death.

What type of synodontis are you looking into getting? Not all will be suitable for this size of tank.

For a 55 gal you could do 6-8 of the praecox. Don't worry too much about the sex ratio. In my experience it doesn't matter.

As for shells, I agree with pittbull...escargot shells are cheap and look nice IMO.
