looking for oddballs

4 nandus nandus or 4 butis butis will work, or a mix. They are camoflauge ambush predators, very cool. Also exodons will work. You have to get good filtration and be willing to do water changes every week because they need to be housed like african cichlids, a little overstocked size wise to spread aggresion. Id say 15-18 would be ok in the 40....these have to be my favorite...always moving and will eat anything from bugs to flake to feeders. Remind me of mini piranahs to a point. Just be careful of tankmates.

Really.... don't care how hard it is?

Try a Mbu Puffer fish, then. Needs like 1000-2000 gallons and VERY aggressive and near impossible to keep alive.

Except that he specified a 40 gallon tank in his original post.

They are hard to keep, due to their needs of HIGH QUALITY water!! I think you could eaisly keep it in a 500g tank for life....as long as the dimensions are right 8x3x3 (right at about 500g) should do for life....even the AC profile on them says a 180 "might' work for life, though I think thats a bit too small.
