low light/low tech scape for goldfish

dimensions are 30" long, 12" from front to back, and 18 1/2" tall...so im guessing that the "30 gallon" that i was sold is more like 28 gallons

28.83 gallons

so is there a plant that would grow into a carpet or lawn under low lighting or would an attempt just be a waste of my time?

That's a 29 gallon. You should be able to find specific lighting for those...the 24" would be a hassle to try and fit on.

Carpet plants need more light penetration, hence the need for higher wattage. With goldfish, aside from the fact that they will dig it up, remember that they are poop machines. The less stuff in the way, the easier to clean :)

hm...well with the 30" fixture being my only option for this oddly shaped tank, that would give me 2.25 wpg. is that enough to attempt at least some carpet plant? or would it be the point where i would need to start dosing ferts and give Co2?
I really want to make this one look good, all of my tanks now are bare bottoms. sure they're pristine, but i kinda want at least one tank to be pretty you know? even if that means more work on it lol

So 2.2 wpg is too much? im just worried that i will end up not having enough if i ever end up trying some other plants or something

If you are planning on making this into a fully planted tank (without the goldfish) down the road than the 2.2 wpg would be a good option. But even then 1.2 wpg gives you enough light for a good amount of the plants you listed. Besides, with this being your first planted tank I assume (correct me if I'm wrong and ignore this then...), the low light plants are far more forgiving and not as picky when it comes to ferts, Co2, etc. It definitely would be an easier place to start at. :)

thanks jpappy
so if i were to get the 2.2 wpg, would running the 2.2 wpg like half of the day be the equivalent of running the lower wpg all day?
