Lowes Pea Gravel

Does anyone use the pea gravel from Lowes in their tank? I mean the stuff that costs about $3.50 for a 50lb bag.

Is it safe to use in the tank? does it affect pH?

I've had three bags in my 125 gallon for the last 18 months. It looks great. You just need to wash it a lot before you use it. I used a stainless steel colander.

Thanks, its in my 55G now. Took a while to clean it all, but it looks nice in there. Just now I have to try and get my plants to stay down (although I have most of them pulled up due to trying to keep a close eye on my currently sick fish).

its a little harder since its bigger. personally i would look for something like turface yes its a little more but i saw so much growth when i switched. also remember to use root tabs with the pea gravel.

I might eventually look for some turface to mix in with it, or even pick up a bag or two of eco-complete and mix it with the gravel. Good point about the root tabs, forgot about those.

First thing though is to get my fish healthy again, plants are lower on the priority list at the moment (which is actually pretty annoying since I was getting good growth!!).
