Luminous Earth Aquarium - 1-gallon Planted Nano

That's so pretty. I also like the orange, with a green plant. I should move my ghost shrimp out of the community tank, it's tentacles have gotten so long he could lasso a little fish. Or maybe that's just MTS rationalization. ;)

I am going to go with red cherry shrimp. Now I just need to find a source. I had some a while back, but the colony died out on me.

Love this idea. My first "tank" ever (I was 7) was a square glass vase. In fact, I actually went to Cost Plus and looked at their square glass vases :) They have two sizes, both about 5.75" x 5.75, one is 12" tall the other 16". So the smaller water volume would be around 1 gallon, the larger a bit over 1.5 gallon (taking into consideration the width of the bottom and the fact that you can't fill it all the way). Should I go for the smaller or larger one? Thinking soil and sand, planted (val, java moss, guppy grass, etc.) and red cherries. What do you guys think?
Monika

BTW, any picture updates hydrophyte?

Always go for the bigger one. With the taller one you can add in skinny pieces of wood to add vertical interest as well as give the shrimp places to climb. You could stick some moss onto the sticks and put dwarf hair grass or pygmy chain sword as a grassy bottom with maybe one or two pieces of a stem plant. A val will outgrow that, and pulling it out will cause a mess. Please post up a thread w/pics when you try this, I've got a 1g bowl that I'm going to also try this with eventually...

:iagree: And I still want to see more of that syno riparium! :D

There won't be water movement aside from water top offs or changes... A few inches taller won't matter. Just go for a lot of grassy plants with a few stems to add height along with a nice skinny gnarled piece of wood. More plants + less shrimp = better chances of success, I think.

Lovely bowls, but I would prefer an emersed plant setup such as Anthurium or Spathiphyllum growing bare root...with some sand and gravel on the bottom for the snails. Might make feeding difficult, but MTS don't need to eat much. Wouldn't even need to add snails at all, really.

Putting the plants in the water and having to look through the bowl with the designs on it makes it a little busy, IMO, but looking at just roots wouldn't interfere, I don't think. Although some Marimo balls would probably be nice in there and wouldn't draw much attention away from the pattern :)

I haven't done much else new with this. The plant is looking happy enough. I'll post updates whenever I get to adding something new.

What do you think about dosing Excel to get the plant going a bit more? Does anybody know the drops to ml conversion? I am guessing that it will be something like one or two drops of Excel/day.

You could do excel, but y'know... It is a crypt. They're not gonna win any speed growing records... :p: but I'm sure it would still be beneficial! How much sunlight is it getting?
