Mafia Game Strategy 101

nice idea labby! Is this worthy of being stickied, or will it be like the Mafia Games thread, just wanderin around out there?

Come on back in Mg, it'll be fun :)

Thank you for taking the time to start this thread LR. The games have been less fun lately and hopefully this will help to bring them back to what they were. (If that happens, it might even bring back the players that I learned from.) I do miss those games.

The key to remember is that this is an intellectual game of strategy.

Arguments should be "You are scum because you said this or you did that," not "your mom".

It is about outmaneuvering your opponent. It has seemed like the mindset was to survive to the end of the game. As LR stated it is a team game do not be afraid to get lynched if it will help your team win.

As LR stated this game is an intellectual game played primarily by adults. Keep text speak or chat room speak out of the game. Use capital letters and punctuation.

That will insure that the players know what you are trying to say.

Mafia Strategy 101

  • Day 1 is full of banter. There is really nothing to go on if you are a regular townie, but banter can lead to clues as to who has what role. Usually at the 24 hour mark, play will take a more serious note. It is often useful to go back and read the day 1 banter as looking back at how players interact can provide clues to who is communicating with who. Do not let the banter frustrate you; if this is your first game, feel free to join in. There is a difference though, between day 1 banter and spamming the thread with nonsense. Please make sure you join in the former and not in the latter.

  • The night 1 lynch is generally an innocent. Sometimes the town gets lucky and is able to lynch scum. If you are scum, it is your job to avoid becoming the lynch. Laying low is a lame way to do so, and though you may avoid a day 1 lynch, you’re most likely going to be called out on it. Voting patterns are very important to look at post nightfall. A good strategy when scum is to make sure your team has their votes spread out. About the only time you’ll find an entire scum team on the same person is when they’re trying to save one of their own from being lynched. Also, if you are scum, avoid being the kill vote on an innocent if you can help it.

I think it's a fine start Labby. My only objection is that these points kind of make D1 seem like a blow-off day. I disagree with that. I've had countless arguments about the importance of D1 on D1, and I'd just leave these points out of any final versions. How important is it that a newbie know ahead of time that there's a good chance that the first lynchee will be innocent?

Thanks for the input Mad, I didn't mean it to come across as day 1 being a waste. Quite the opposite, I think for all the banter and goofing around on the surface, you can get quite a good read on someone from day 1 play. It's why I always go back and re-read the day 1 stuff, even if it seems as fluffy as kittens playing on clouds.
