I am making a paludariums for my 2 future leopard frogs. Here are my plans thus far:

55g
2 Leopard Frogs
Possibly some fish tankmates (so large "pond" area)
1/2 Water; 1/2 Land
Lots of rocks, driftwood and plants

I would *really* like to have a waterfall/stream look. I read on several websites such as: http://www.amphibiancare.com/frogs/articles/waterfall.html
that this is possible to do with a canister filter- which would be my preferred method, I think.

Do you think this is possible and a good idea? Any suggestions?

Any ideas for how I can get the screen lid to shut properly so there are no escapees (or is there an alternative to a screen?)?

I have no experience w/ canister filters yet, what are some of the potential problems I may have?

Thanks!!!

Yes I have a waterfall using a smaller canister filter. It's harder to hide but can be effective. You could hide it via drilling and using bulkhead fittings

I would use a glass top rather than a screen top; it should be heavy enough to prevent escapes for the most part, and will help maintain humidity. Just cut away enough of the plastic curtain at the rear edge to make room for the canister hoses.

I think that is a great idea (I think I'll do it to!). Using a smaller canister filter with smaller tubing may make it easier to creatively hide the intake/outake with rockwork, driftwood, plantings, etc. The extra cleaning capicity and easy mainetenance of the external canister is a real plus as well. I think I see a terrarium with a waterfall in my empty 25 gallon tall tank! Keep us posted!

Oh, and thanks for the comments/ideas so far! Keep 'em coming! I think I can hide them decently with all the wood, rocks and plants that'll be in there. And it'll be no more obnoxious than the heaters and intake tubes in my tanks. ::::shrugs:::::

I've used both glass and screen. I don't recommend full screen; you'll need to cover at least part of it with an impermeable material. Live plants help with air quality. If you're keeping fish you'll likely need an air pump, which will also help.

Thanks! Can you get tops that are part glass and part screen, are they easy to make, or should I just stick w/ full glass?
