Dork, I too had been told that the sun corals prefer a shaded area of the tank. Is that often used just to entice them to open up during the day?

No, they will open up whenever they sense food. The shade area is to lessen the chance of algae overgrowing the coral.

I am in micro bubble hell with the aqua clear 50's as I had to rig mesh over the cone so no critters would get sucked up (I lost a clown the first week)..i ordered 2 maxi jet 900's hopefully this will help.
