Massive deaths in shrimp tank help

you said it was your first time adding calcium, then your third time....you change the water weekly, but gravel vac 3x a week..... i'm not trying to be mean, but i'm confused. if noone has accurate information then they can't help you. how do you gravel vac without changing water? when you do a water change, how much do you change? did you treat the water before adding it to the tank? is it the first time you added the calcium, like you said in your original post?

Sry for the confusing posts. It was the thrid time I added calcium (dont no y I put first). I change 25% water each week and I do small gravel vacs to clean the top layer of soil a few times a week. Let me no if that clears things up.

the nitrite would be the issue. How much and what are you feeding? you need to do water changes until your nitrite does not register and test at least once if not twice daily. I am concerned about the stocking levels. Apple snails produce a surprising amount of waste for their size. If at all possible, I would try and move some of hte adult apple snails to a different tank or increase your water changes to about 40% every 2-3 days. the difficulty of maintaining an invert tank is that the food provided often sits for awhile while they graze since they do not eat frenetically like fish do. I wish you all the best of luck!

It doesn't sound like an overfeeding issue, but you have a nitrite spike for some reason. Water changes are your best friend. Snails, although more "tolerant" than shrimp, are still very very sensitive to this. Have you noticed any of them extending their siphons more than normal or being inactive or hanging out on the glass instead of cruising around?

well that is good anyway. are you removing the dead shrimp as you find them? are the remaining shrimp seemingly ok at this point?

Yeah I have been removing the dead ones. they all seem fine but I didnt notice anything was wong til a found many dead shrimps =(. I hope their all better now. Just did a 25% water change. (and will do a few more before long.)
