I have three dojos and they spend all of their time at the surface of the aquarium! They didn't until I got a serious population of floating leaves on my plants. Now they spend all of their time hiding in the leaves and even climb on top of them with the upper half of their body out of the water searching for food that has gotten caught.
I hear that. I have three kuhlis in my five gallon, and one almost never leaves the top two inches of water.
It's actually kind of strange. Two of the kuhlis are identically sized, but the third, the loner, is much, much smaller. I suspect he might be of slightly different sub-species/genus or whatever, but I can't tell for sure. All three look like banded kuhlis to me.
I have a water wisteria that was the official first inhabitant of my five gallon tank, and it didn't do well at first. I started to die slowly, and eventually rotted through at the base of the stem and began to float. My bulb burnt out though, so I found a nice compact flourescent that would fit my hood, and before I knew it, the floating stem was throwing off roots and leaves like crazy. Now, I have a giant ball of floating wisteria. The loner kuhli lives in that. Sometimes you won't see him for days, but then you'll see him slithering through. Surprisingly, as I look over, I now see him on the gravel, which is very rare. I just did a water change and probably ticked him off. He's actually the kuhli in my avatar picture.
