Mega-Powerful Nitrate and Phosphate Remover Replaces Skimmer, Refugium, part 1-4

something seems odd about this thread. Can anyone other than SantaMonica chime in with results?

(no offense to anyone intended, this is a a solid concept. I just think its odd how vehemently it is being defended with no real controversy on this board)

A Fourth User Gets Results!

This is the guy who, when he posted his results on RC, all the clowns started shouting as loud as they could to drown him out. His post came right after I posted the Third User with great results, so the clowns started hitting their post keys in rapid succession (amazing how RC allows personal attacks). His username on RC is Navipro1, and if anyone here has an account there, please invite him to come here for reading and posting, since my RC account is now deleted.

Anyways, his results-post was short and sweet, since he did not tell us ahead of time that he was trying a screen:

"I tried it on 1 of my tanks which always had hair algae problem, I have a refugium for the system but never worked that well, after I implemented this idea, most of my hair algae problem is gone and I can really feed my corals / fish more now and run the lights for a longer photo period, I was sceptical at first but decided to give it a try, I'm glad I did, its now paying off BIG TIME!"

Does a thread need "REAL CONTROVERSY" to be a viable discussion? It could be that others are just waiting to see what the finial outcome will be or could be expected before diving into the project.

no no no, thats not it at all... the discussion has been great! I feel the tone has been defensive without much reason (because this has been a really open minded thread). Seemed a bit odd is all.

I guess I'm really looking forward to someone posting their results directly, not through anecdotes or pictures.

I'm mostly curious about doing something like this on a freshwater system, specifically a planted tank. There seem to be a couple hurdles though, especially for a planted tank.

1. Would the algae spread to the main tank if you weren't using UV?
2. Would it deplete nutrients that ornamental plants would need to grow?

I have a hunch that the answer to #2 is "yes" but that still leaves it as a good candidate for fish only freshwater tanks.

Cool, I had just been over on RC and saw the insults and flack that was being thrown at SM when they ones throwing the crap hadn't done any research on their own. I think, for salt anyway, this could be a big help to lowering the maintenance. I have no idea about fresh water aquariums.

oh man, I just did a little reading over there and it kind of puts everything into perspective... I can't believe that thread is still open!

Anyway, I'll keep watching this thread and see if I can learn a few things

The Power Of Light.

Here's an interesting growth sequence. This fellow started out with just a low power NO tube, on one side. After switching to a 23W CFL, things changed:

SM, now that we see it can grow alge how about showing some real result numbers? Might put some of the nay-sayers to rest.
