Well, I've been having trouble doing much with the campus dermestarium lately because its the summer (so I'm not on campus much) and they are doing construction (so the stuff I need is on 2 different floors and behind locked doors I don't have keys to). So, to try and at least get SOME stuff done during the rest of the summer, I've made a mini dermestarium for home use. I can do some smaller and more delicate specimens using this. I also did this because I owe LifelessForm a flying gecko...:o Now I will actually be able to get that done! I'm also planning on running some small birds and other critters through it.

The micro-dermestarium. Just a 1 gallon critter keeper. They said it would be 'great for small animals like goldfish' I just scooped out some beetles, larvae and frass from the larger tank and chucked it in. The cup in the center holds the specimens.

An inside view. The kuhli can be seen in the upperish left.

A closeup on the kuhli. He has only been in for an hour, but they have already defleshed the tail and head. Hopefully they won't eat the bones, but its hard to tell. Fish have very soft bones, especially small or young ones (and this one is both).

Very freaking cool, keep those pictures coming! And mail me some of those beetles, lol!!!

Man, the beetles are ALMOST done with the kuhli already! Just a little bit of flesh left now.

That's a great way to dispose of your dead fish. Tried it with a Pacu yet?

Wish I had a dead pacu to do! I'm always looking for donations though (hint hint).

Kuhli is done! Doesn't look too bad to me. I think they still ate some of the bone, but it's hard to tell. I would need a diagram of the kuhli skeleton and a microscope for that.

Wow, they cleaned it pretty good.

Cool stuff, man! If there are delicate areas you want to keep the beetles away from, you can brush a little formalin on them. Also, isopods work well for fragile specimens; they're less likely to pull pieces off and carry them away, or chew through ligaments.

Wish I had a dead pacu to do! I'm always looking for donations though (hint hint).

I had an absolute HUGE Pacu years ago that I wanted to have taxidermied. I kept it in the freezer for awhile, but finally had to throw it away because I didn't have the bank. I wish I would have known/thought of this then!!!!

If I find another big dead catfish or pike down at the lake, want it?? :D
