Whats the deal with these fishes? They are fascinating to me, but I've seen them in freshwater and brackish... They look pissed off all the time too, are they agressive? Anyone know these fish that can post some general info about them? Wanted to put a few in a discus tank eventually.. (good bad idea?)

Not sure if they are a ciclid, wasn't sure where to post this..

No, mono sebae aren't even faintly related to cichlids. They live in fresh water when they're very young, but as they become juveniles move to brackish, then full salt water. They get really big, and I think the minimum for a few of them is a 300g.

Discus wouldn't work with them, as one is freshwater and the other SW.

Juveniles can handle freshwater but salinity will be gradually increased as they mature. Definitely no discus with it. Aside from that, these monos can be aggressive and the discus will not appreciate being harassed.

We had 2 of them in my boys BW tank. They became very agressive. Would even grab food from my hands just above the water when I went to feed the tank.

They grow quite large & are schooling fish. A 300g or larger, would be required to handle a school of adults. They prefer marine conditions as adults.

Where are you guys getting 300 Gallon minimum? I think thats a little over kill(minimum) for a small school of 8-10inch inch fish.

they get a lot bigger than that, like a foot, top to bottom.

no its not overkill, it conscientious:headbang2:

Do some research on Monos!! In the wild they do grow to be those sizes, however ask around and talk to people that have kept them. Rarely even in public aquariums do they grow bigger than 5-6" I have been researching this and talking to many people who keep them and even talking to caretakers at aquariums. Although they can get 10-12" in the wild it is rarely that, even in 10,000 gallon tanks that they grow much over 5-6 " Therefore I would have to agree that 300 gallon minimum is way overkill!

Mine aren't a year old yet and their still growing.
