Monthly Water Chanes???

Did you get a load of this thread?

All of a sudden Fishy can afford someone to clean his gravel!

All this time he could have spent all that money paying someone to do pwcs for him.

Told him if he is smart he'd buy a bigger tank while he was at it.

Either Fishy is a
:troll:

or one of the most ignorant people I've ever come across.

I'm done with his posts....

what i dont understand is why so many people suggest weekly water changes in a fully planted tank. Doesnt plants absorb nitrate, ammonia etc? so why is water change still required? or to be done so often as oppose to every couple months.

i am doing water changes on my planted tank every week because i am told to...but not really understanding why it's needed.

Because plants don't use up heavy metals, DOCs or TDSs. There are also other pollutants that we can't test for.

I see one answer already -- let me provide a few more
- you need to vacuum that often so why not change?
- it helps to balance all the nutrients because in changing lots (say 50%)
you have some control
- fish pee in the water -- yes, ammonia, but other things too -- lets not
make them swim in it
- other stuff accumulates in the water -- if you change 50% a week you
don't have to worry about it because you cut it in half every week.
- its fun to do stuff with your kids (no ... I mean your pets!)

To add to quenton and Ice's posts:

Plants get a lot of their nutrients from tap water -- phosphates, nitrates, iron, calcium, and a host of others . Some tap water more than others, of course. Some municipalities have lots of the good stuff, some don't.

Changing out 50% is akin to fertilizing the plants.

And of course if you use EI, you have to change about 50% ever week to limit the accumlated nutrients you are adding.
That too!

Hey, did you sign up for Greg Watson's 21 Day EI Reminder?
