Moon Lighting for aquariums

Shekoi

Trying to start up again
I've seen these lights that are meant to be the same as moon light and allow us to view the fish after the main lights have gone off.

Has anybody got these? do they work as they should? look good?

most of the adverts i've seen show them on reef tanks, can they be used on freshwater aquariums?

Anybody got pictures?

cheers shekoi. :look:

You can use them on any type tank you wish..

if you willing to DIY there are 2 main choice and both are cheap..

LED - try radio shack or another electronic part shop

Cold cathode - the light used when tricking out computers...

myself I like cold cathode...cheap, long lasting, and since they tend to be long light you don't need many to get a good effect...

I plan on adding them to my FW tank ASAP

i have some. they look nice but i don't use them too much. I only turn them on when people are around in the evening. i'll try and get a shot next time i come by a digital camera.

I have Coralife moonlights on my tank, and they look great. If you have some surface agitation, the light actually seems to flicker/ripple, which makes it seem even more realistic. Nocturnal species also seem to enjoy the moonlighting and can become more active in the evening.

I was interested in this too.
These guys make a neat LED that simulates moonlight if, like me you wish to keep your bulbs for Plants and have an additional light without altering your hood.

I'm getting one next week

I'm planning to DIY my own moonlight (or get lazy and purchase one), but in the meantime I'm using a little nightlight I found - it's a 1W fluorescent bulb, puts out roughly the same colour/amount of light as the single LED moonlight in my light fixture (which I can't use since it's blocked by the centre brace). It sits between the two light fixtures and I turn it on at lights out. Once the room is dark and my eyes adjust, I can see everything in the tank and it doesn't disturb the fish. I'm thinking of getting another, so the light comes from both sides rather than near the center and everything's just a tiny bit brighter.
I've seen other posts where people mention using those photosensitive green glowing nightlights as well.

Charlie,

Those are cool lights indeed! I wonder, do you think I'd need two of them for a 55gal? I especially like the mini-moon bright's!

Thanks.

I like this site for lunar light. It has a "lunar tracker" that simulates the different phases of the moon, from full to no, and everywhere in between.

if your planning on using a cold cathode from a computer, can you please tell me/post where you get a molex to ac adapter, i haven't had any luck finding one, i think this is the hardest part of going cold cathode diy since it isn't a common adapter
