If you put "just barely enough to cover the bottom" you may find that you will spend a lot of time smoothing it out to cover the bottom because there is so little...kind of like the hair on the side of my head and my big bald spot
I would suggest more, maybe at least half an inch on the front of the tank and an inch at the back.
I put Silica sand in my tank and it was cloudy at first but settled completely within a day or two. I haven't had any problems, its very clean. Fish seem to like it and i haven't encountered any problems with the canister filter. Also, when churning up the sand, it doesn't mean you throw up all the sand all over the place, I just use the opposite end of my fish net and poke it and slowly move it around and making sure there are no air pockets or gas pockets, nothing drastic. The tank shouldn't get all cloudy again when doing this.
It looks great and for me has been very clean and easy maintenance.
