Mosquito Larve..Good 4 food?

Blood worms are actually Midge larvae (closely related to mosquitos) most that come into the us are collected in Mexico. To my knowledge they don't occur in the US (unless in the south west) But you will have mosquitos around your area, so if you left a bowl out, you probably could end up with mosquito larvae, which are for all practical purposes the same type of food as blood worms. Here's a site with some info about Blood Worms

ok well I'm going to let this batch of larvae die, don't want extra amounts of mosquitos around, and try more cleaner water.

But Seeing as you guys say its ok, an it isn't a "at-risk" area, (thanks for your concern) but I guess I'll be collecting larvae.

I've got a small water catchment at the back of my house and there are all sorts of small fish like the "mosquito eater" so I'm assuming they will be safe because these guys are in the bucket loads, I use them somtimes for feeders and dithers.

but thanks for the help.

*just a random statement*
I caught a whole bunch of 3mm-5mm platy's/mosquito eaters (could be both) this arvo. I was breeding these guys, but the females are some what reluctant to squeeze them out.

but what amazed me was the female platy's were pregnant and 1 of the females had her batch of about 15-20 and then couple days after was fat with babies again! and there are no males in the tank.

I soon read that they could have multiple batches after mating.

anywayz...thanks again for the info

If you land up producing more larvae than you can feed at once, try freezing them on a cookie sheet. Presto, cheap homemade frozen food that doesn't bite back!

Mosquito larve harvesting was Recommended in Aquarium Fish USA mag. Just be sure they don't turn to mosquitos. If they do, just put em in the water! We get ALOT of those guys in Houston and they get in the house and get into the tank and the fish eat them like candy!

oh ok, I thought it was one of those untouched subjects where it can be done, but with extra precaution.

but thats good to here that its recommended and that your fish love it, I've just put out a fresh bowl of water and its now the waiting game.
