My 29g Reef Log

Lol.

All you need to worry about now is to get the circulation going, not stir up your sand, and get the skimmer on there.

That should really get things started.

And your die off should hopefully be enough to get your cycle started, so you don't have to worry about throwing something dead in there.

But you might. No way to tell before you fire it up.

its down to personal preference whether you run the skimmer during a cycle or not..Unless your using live rock that is bearly cured and is going to suffer a lot of die-off, then yes, run it through the cycle..If there is none, or hardly and die off, then i would not run...Like i said, its down to personal preference...

As subliminal says above, your after getting good water movement around the tank, in various directions, get it a little random...

From everything I understand about skimming, the first week or so you aren't really going to get any skimmage anyway...your skimmer is just going to be a bubble making machine for your aquarium.

Personally, I'd try to get that out of the way as soon as possible.

Plus, the skimmer circulates water, too.

But, there's no correct way and yadda yadda do whatcha want. It's your very own personal underwater kingdom...you can take it any direction you see fit.

:)

Running a skimmer will ony prolong the cycle. Not a good idea, it removes the compounds needed to create the proper amount of bacteria in your rock and sand.

I would say that that statement is up for debate.

Given, you've a lot more experience than I do, but I've been reading non-stop for the last few months, and I've probably read 1000 posts to the contrary.

Of course, I've also read a few hundred that agree with you.

That's the fun thing about this hobby.

But, all that being said, he has absolutely no way to take anything out of his water right now. I used my old freshwater filters during my cycle to at least clear the water with carbon..and it worked really well.

I don't even have a skimmer yet...but according to UPS tracking it should be here today. :)

His rock was purchased cured, so as Niko said he will not have much die off, in some situations yes it would be a good idea to run it, but I don't feel this is one of them, all his cycle will be is basicly a booster for the cured rock, as it is cured his cycle should go quick anyways.
