My 30 gallon planted tank - neon tetras and fantail guppies

I don't know about a lot smaller, they are smaller. In my experience neons have been a lot hardier than cardinals for me, I'm sure tank raised fish who have been cared for right (such as the ones msjinkzd offers) would be ok. The ones from the chain pet stores seem to succumb to shipping and acclimation stress a lot more so than neons.

Just a quick update:
Guppies fries are surviving and I recently saw some baby shrimps for the first time.

Yeah, i heard a lot of horror stories about them big fish stores.
I'll only buying from LFS.

If you do decide to add more cories, the pygmy cories stay really small and may be a good choice. I just picked up some habrosus and really like them.

I still haven't gotten the Cories yet, I but I think i'll go pick a few up end of the month.
I'll be sure to pick up the pygmy ones.

Here an updated video, this time it's in HD:

After reading up a bit more on cory cats, I realize my substrate isn't suitable for their sensitive barbels. :(

Are there any other "small" bottom dwellers I can use as a clean up crew?

Your tank looks amazing! You did an excellent job scaping it.

Do you fertilize? CO2?

Thanks Goodcreature!

Yes, I use:

  • Seachem Flourish Tabs
  • Seachem Flourish Excel
  • Some DIY liquid fertilize my cousin gave me

I do use CO2, but it's only DIY version.
If you look to the back right hand side, you will see the black tubing for the CO2.
It looks like it needs to be changed again. :(

I really should get compressed Co2, but I'm not even sure to fill/refill them around my area.

I got some Yunnanilus cruciatus Pygmy loaches a month back and they make a good clean up crew. I just have the regular natural colored aquarium gravel and they seem to be doing fine. These guys also seem to swim everywhere, not just on the bottom, especially during feeding time, lol.

And I had to call around where I live about CO2 but most wielding places fill and sometimes even carry the 5lb cylinders.

I kept reading how people was required to trade in their shiny new aluminium tank for an old expired (i dont get it) scratched up steel tank.
After reading all that, i got scared -- haha

Why would a tank have an expiration date?
Compressed air can crack the tank or something?

Once the tank is past its "expiration date" it has to be hydrotested to ensure it can still hold pressure safely. Its a precaution because eventually the tanks can fail but after each test they are considered safe for 4-5 more years. I don't understand why they make you take their beatup dirty tanks though. You pay for a nice new tank then you pay them to take it.

I almost paid $55 to get an empty shiny new 5lb tank from Amazon but also read somewhere that some places only trade them in, so called around and where I live $60 for a filled one was the best price. I figured the CO2 tank is always out of sight anyway, inside the aquarium cabinet.
