MY betta vase

you better hope there isn't a lot of fertilizer residue still on that plant or you'll have one dead betta

Heres a twist on the peace lily and betta vase,
only i have a paradise fish in a tank..
I made a biofilter with a peace lily by planting it in a pond-plant basket thats 1/3 in and 2/3 out of the water and filled with crushed brick.
the tank water trickles through it keeping the tank crystal clear.
The fish feeds the bacteria which in-turn feeds the plant which is growing like crazy, much faster than one growing as a standard pot plant.
the basket has java moss starting to grow over it which should make it look real nice in a few months.
The only problem with the filter is that its poor at mechanical filtration.

btw a little fertilizer residue won't hurt the fish.
A peacelily will only do well for a few months with its roots submerged in water as its only a part-time bog plant. youll probably need to replace it at least a couple times a year

I doubt that. Pot grows pretty fast :joke:

What do you have running the filter? Is it attached to a hob somehow? If its just a basket in the water it will need something to provide current, like an airstone.

Or if you use a HOB that would provide the mech.filtration, and have the spillway empty to the basket.....oh GOD why did you put that idea into my head, I just broke the bank today getting stuff for my fish. Now I have to sell my car to get a new tank to try this on!

The pot sitting mostly out of the water on a bracket so that it works as a wet-dry so no need for noisy bubbles (the tank is next to my bed and is totaly silent)
I got the smallest pond pump I could find, which is still way to powerful, Iv got it turned down to minimum but it could be used in a future, larger setup with more 'interesting' plants.
I drilled some 12mm pipe that works as a sprinkler on the top of the pot. Java moss covers the surface and eliminates the sound off trickling water.
it suits the paradise fish and would also suit betta as theres very little surface agitation
If I had more fish crapping in the water id have to make a prefilter for the pump.

I could post some pics in a few days if you want

I'm not sure a betta would like a surface completely covered with java moss. Might make his surfacing-for-air inconvenient.

I'd like to see that Ohbly ! I'll be looking for your pic !

I don't think the moss is entirely covering the surface....just over the plant basket....sounds like a pretty cool setup, I totally relate to Sumthinfishy..lol....about having to go and try that one out !
