My cichlids have been dying 1 by 1 for the past few months. First ithought it was bloat due to the white stringy poo and treated accordingly. The stringy poo stopped and now they are still going. They seem to lose a lot of weight and the stomachs curve changes and it looks like behind there gills go pinkish.

I have attached a pic. Let me know what you think,

Cheers

Could you please provide more details? Here are the questions:
1. What are the water parameters?
2. Tanksize?
3. Fish (aside from the one on pic)?
4. Foods? Appearance of excreta?
5. Tank maintenance schedule?
6. Where are you located? This matters if you are looking for treatments that are either restricted by law or by demand or supply but there are many factors involved in it anyway.

The moment I notice your pic, I suspect intestinal parasites. Levamisole hydrochloride or flubendazole is your best bet.

Hi Lupin,
I have a 55g that has been going for 8-10 months. My PH is around 7.6 from the tap, I actually noticed today that the tank PH was a bit low at around 6.8. This is the first time it has been like this forthe 8 months. I dont know if it is coincidental. I am running an eheim canister 2213.

I have venustus x 2, peacocks x 2, cobalt blue x 2, red tail shark x 1, 2 x electric yellows and I think 1 mpangi ( i forget the name to be honest).

I have been feeding them NLS cichlid formula (pellet form).
I mainytain the tank weekly have done so sice the beginning. I use prime to neutralise the tap water.
I am located in Sydney Australia.

Excrete look brown and small broken.

I have been having problems with green algae and removed one of the twin tube from my lights which seems to be having a positive impact.

Anything else you need that can help let me know. I appreciate your response.

Regards

I need to know your ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. They're important.:) Use API liquid test kit for accurate results. If possible, include your hardness levels so you can find out why your pH dropped.

Sorry, ammonia 0, nitrites 0 and nitrates are around 5 to 10ppm at time of water change.

I see you're in Australia. Wait for those who live in Australia to step forward and inform you where you can get the levamisole hydrochloride or flubendazole.

Thanks Lupin,
You are right, cant find those product in australia, what about metronidazole will that be ok? I can order off ebay?

The ph of your water is the problem.
It sounds like the poo is looking correct brown and broken..so parasites are more than likely gone.
Ph under 7.5 is not good for these type of cichlids. Get this right along with proper water and filter changes and the fish will improve.

I don't think the pH is of concern as much as where the hardness is at and a better definition of what cichlids they have..

Keep treating for internal parasites. The fish may be dying due to internal damage from the parasites. Fish TB is another possibility, but hard to know for sure. Just to be safe, make sure you're wearing gloves when working in the tank or handling fish.
