What kind is he? Looks similar to the razor clams I dig and eat from the beach near my grandma's house

How exciting. I was going to get some golden clams, but changed my mind... too worried about how often they slowly starve to death. Would really like to get them for a goldfish tank still if I could be sure how to sustain them properly. You've kept this one alive long enough that it must work out okay in an aquarium.
the most difficult thing i find about keeping bivalves is keeping the tank cool enough during the summer

He has vanished again this morning!! fully dug in under the gravel...thanks for the advice about the green water! I will give that a try and see if he likes it!
If you decided to keep a clam please make sure your subterrate is suitable and deep enough for them to dig and cover their shells compleatly...if a clam cannot dig, it will starve! and keep the tank food very varied as clams are omnivores and will filtre plant and meat matter to eat!
