My dads tank

hhhmmm, wonder if this is the big brother to the seven year old that lost interest!:lipssealedsmilie: Sorry! Could not resist. Poor fish.......wonder what the params are in that tank.........

nitrates are probably through the roof. He probably never does water changes. I hate to say this but he will understand when the whole tank is dead on him.

Also did everyone miss the silver dollars. 6 silver dollars they get 8in diameter. 55 WAY TOO SMALL FOR SILVER DOLLARS I'd say

Overstocked is an understatement to say the least. If you honestly believe that what you are doing is fine, you seriously need to reconsider. Too many fish in such a cramped space = major problems with the fish and the water quality. It is inevitable.

Seriously, all them fish.. in one tank? That is one of the most over stocked tanks I have EVER heard of!
I don't even know what to say because by now with all the other responses you know what needs to be done, so you really need to do it, because that fish list is just NUTS! I cant believe somebody can be so self centered to keep all these fish in one tank because YOU like them and because you THINK their happy...
holy crapp...

All--
I've been reading this thread and it makes me sad. The original poster obviously didn't realize that his stock list would get such an outraged response or he would not have proudly put it out there in public. We don't want to make people afraid of the wrath of the group, you know?

Just put yourselves in his shoes for just a second and hear how all the responses must sound -- and realize that we all start out from scratch, we all begin to learn at some point, we all have good intentions, we are all just people.

If we had been invited over to someone's house and were shown his seriously overstocked tank we would have felt the same alarm but we would have given our information in a way that encouraged the tank owner to learn more rather than discouraged the tank owner from asking questions in public.

I know I'm sticking my own neck out here but do you all think we could switch the tone to something less accusatory and more encouraging?

Bad idea. It's not flaming unless he at least admits he's wrong. We are trying to correct him.

And fine, I'll "encourage" him to return all his fish and start cycling again.

:troll: ? I can't really take this that seriously. Some person who thinks to cram that amount of incompatible/inappropriate fish into a 55 gallon has obviously done next to no research, and to have them actually believe that what they are doing is saving fish from a horrible fate, it all just seems a bit too contrived. Me thinks the o.p. was just trying to stir the pot a lil bit.

No kidding.

all gouramis are full grown, and yet they're still very happy fish, silver dollars are almost full grow, still very happy fish. sucker fish are all big, still very happy. They've all beenin there a while and still no aggression problems. and Also, i take tending to my fish seriously. 50%water changes every 2 weeks. entire tank cleaning about evey 1 1/2 months to 2 months. my fish are happy, thriving, friendly and fat, growing well. I am please to say that I have truly HAPPY fish..

I'm sorry, but assuming this person is serious, (which I don't think they are), A: it wasn't so much the stock list as the person's response to advice contrary to what they want to belive. B: This person obviously has internet, would it have killed them to read anything at all about any aspect of fishkeeping before embarking on this misguided crusade to save every fish in every walmart? C: If this person were doing this to a group of "higher" animals like dogs, cats, even hamsters, rats, and small rodents, charges would probably be brought against them, but since it's fish we have to coddle them and worry about their feelings? This person has put 60+ lives in danger for no other reason than a stunning refusal to do research.

Any pictures of the tank? It would be interesting to see all these full grown fish thriving together.

Also, do you test your water regularly with a good liquid test kit?

Have you shown your dad this thread since its his tank?
