My grandma used the salt dip on her pond goldfish. She swore by it. Totally forgot about that remedy.
Next time you replace the cartridge, look into buying the fluval/Aquaclear inserts. You can cut the foam to fit your filter, add the biobead bag and then you're only replacing your Carbon (if you use it) once a month. You would instead just clean the filter media as suggested above and that stuff will last forever. I had some that I used for about a year before it needed to be replaced, all i did was clean it once every other week. The biobeads will basically never need to be replaced, so you won't have to deal with minicycles.
Table salt, typically un-iodized is recommended, can be used. It doesn't have to be aquarium salt. I have had salt dips work to help with bloat. Its more concentrated than treating the whole tank, limited to just the fish that needs treatment and done in a way that has always been more effective for me. Take a 1 gallon bowl of tank water, mix in a tablespoon of salt (let it dissolve completely), net the fish, dip the fish (inside the net) into the bowl and hold it for 30 seconds to one minute. If the fish starts to thrash like its in pain dilute the water more, but if not just hold it in there. Do that once a day for about a week. It works pretty well for a lot of things.
Ohhhh okay! That makes a lot of sense! I'll go to the store tomorrow and get them! Thanks so much. That's the foam, yes. What you'll do is buy the foam and the biomax beads in the pic below (though you won't need the 70)

You'll completely throw out the cartridge. Then you'll insert the foam, but you'll have to cut it to size, into your filter. Cut it with enough room to place the bag of biomax beads (they come in their own mesh bag) on top. Basically, that will give you the same type of filter media as the aquaclear filter uses. Its cheaper in the long run, better quality and easier to clean. Next time you're in a shop take a look at the back of the Fluval/Aquaclear (Fluval bought them out so some boxes will say fluval aquaclear or something) at how the media is set up, you'll be doing that. The only thing you need to cut is the foam to fit.
You won't throw these out. You'll just clean the foam and the biomax beads once a week to once a month when you do your water change, depending on your stock load. You'll clean them by squeezing the foam in a bucket of tank water until most of the gunk is out of it. The biomax bag will be cleaned using the same water but you'll shake the bag around. The biomax beads (and the sponge) will house your BB so you won't want to throw them away or rinse them.
I'm sorry to hear about the gourami. I have a hunch that it was unfortunately the dwarf gourami disease that got him as it escalates rapidly and there's no treatment for it that has been shown to work yet.
Okay! I'll definitely do a salt dip if one of my fish ever gets wounded for some reason!I've had them help with ulcers, and fin rot as well as popeye and fight wounds.
(I worked at a pet store and couldn't get upper management to let me use any meds, so I tried dips for everything).
I just bought the fluval inserts! I bought a three pack of small foam and a small bag of biomax beads and just stuck everything in there! I probably didn't need to stick three pieces of the foam in there, but it fit in my filter perfectly with the bag on top. I didn't even need to cut the foam! This worked great Tiff, thanks!Sorry to hear about your gourami. I've always had rotten luck with them myself, so pretty much avoid trying to keep them any more. Pretty fish tho, so maybe once I establish another tank that doesn't house fin nippers and large predatory fish.
Tiff, thanks for that tip for reworking the 40i! I also might need to try it. I like the 40i because it sits well inside my tank, which allows me to pretty much completely cover the top of my tank - which helps reduce evaporation and keep dirt/dust/pet hair out of the tank.
