My dwarf gourami is making a bubble nest!

I was successful on my first attempt breeding Dwarf Gouramis .I followed standard instructions most gave on the internet. No sand needed you will want to clean up the bottom of uneaten food bare bottom or slate..Put 8 inches of water 80sh temp and add Hornwart he will will build another nest.Feed the females plenty of frozen brine shrimp 3 times a day double servings for 3 days at least if they get plump they have eggs and will readily spawn when you add them. The male will look aggressive towards them but they will follow him to the nest after a while..Seed a sponge filter for at least 7 days to use in the breeding tank.

Take the sand out. You need a bare bottom tank to be able to raise the fry after you remove the parents. You also need to be able to siphon off any debris/poop while they are spawning. Trust me, I've bred pearls, dwarves, honeys, thick-lipped, moonlights, and just about every color variety of three spots available.

Okay, we need to start this whole process over I believe. We added sand to the bottom, without thinking about it first. We added a bubble stone just for some water circulation in the tank. We bought a sponge filter, but it isn't working at all. Is there a kind anyone recommends?

Bullrock hasn't touched the bubble nest. Should we start over? His color looks a bit faded and he isn't being very active. We went ahead and removed him and placed him back in the 29g.

Advice please.

Any air-pump should run a sponge filter. When you get one working run it in the home tank for 7 days to get bacteria in the sponge. You don`t want to put a fish in a tank with just a bubbler.A sponge filter is not much different than a hob or cannister. You can also get a valve to control the flow of the sponge for under a buck.Don`t worry male Dwarf Gouramis spend most of their lives building bubble nest if they see females.

It was said/suggested they would be fine in the breeder tank without a filter. So thats why we initially opted to go with the bubbler, just so the water wasn't stagnant. We did end up bringing the sponge filter back to the store today. While there we picked up some more plants that Bullrock should enjoy. :) Right now we are just going to lay back and see what happens. Come on bullrock! You can do it little buddy. :D

Did you get another sponge filter? When you have fry you can run it at 3-4 bubbles per second and it will kept the tank cycled without stressing out the fry with any water current.

Well, Bullrock is back in the 29g. We put some fresh plants in there and he's headed back up into his corner where the lily plant is. Looks like he may start to build another one. If he does, we'll be better prepared. :)

yeah, the lily plant may have more to do with it than you think. he can build a pile of bubbles anywhere, but he CHOSE that spot. my guess is that he's got a dream and a plan... let him live it out! if you really really want the whole fry cycle to complete, maybe let him have the 29 for a while and get a tank for the other fish...

but at the very least, if you decide to move him to the 10 again, you should make sure it's got some plants too, so he'll have something to work with.
