My first SW tank, stocking suggestions?

What are you wanting the tank to be? FOWLR or Reef?

Right now its a FOWLR.. but in the future I'd like to try my hand at a reef system. But thats in the future. I have about 2 watts per gallon right now.

Is there different species of tangs that will live in a 45g? I can't seem to find much that stay below 6"

My fiance likes dwarf lionfish, I think there kind of boring, low activity fish. I'd like something with character and thats lively.

I'd not put any tang in a 45. Are you wanting to stay with reef safe fish or is the reef potential so far in the distance it doesn't matter?

A Yellow Tang tang in a 55g is nuts.

A thing to remember is fish in a tank in a home have stunted growth and never get even close to the advertised size in the wild.

Yep, and when he gets bigger he'll get a bigger home.

I'd preferably stay within reef safe fishies. I do like some angels, particularily Flame Angels.

Personally I'd ditch the damsel but you didn't ask that huh? =)

In addition to the dwarf angel you might consider some of the wrasses such as the canary yellow coris wrasse, the flasher and fairy wrasses and by all means look at getting a goby. They have loads of personality, mine isn't the flashiest looking thing but it is the favorite thing in our tank. Even the dogs love the thing.

What about a scooter blenny? My LFS has a couple and there pretty neat I think.

They are actually a dragonette and require care similiar to a mandarin. I'd advise against it without a refuge and a large mature tank
