My First SW Tank!

Hmmm, odd, I used copper medicine quite a bit in the FW tank. Again, this 29G tank has been running nonstop for 14 years though.. so the copper may have all leached out long before I went reef.

Why? My tank is great. I have been researching for 14 years now.. and still learning. Why do I need someone else telling me to do some research. I am just pointing out once again how people are telling others you CANT/DONT/WONT when there are plenty of others from the CAN/DO/WILL camp as well.

"People" say don't use a FW tank that had copper meds run.. well, 12 years ago people were not really saying that.. so I did it.. and never had a problem with my brackish or FOWLR tank due to the copper. So, I say it is definately 100% possible to do.. My tank is proof of that.

Would I recommend anyone doing it today with the knowledge gained.. NO.. but I wouldn't tell anyone it is not possible to do.. just not worth the risk when the tank is one of the cheapest parts to replace.

well.

most people weigh the consequences of a miniscule amount of copper in a reef tank, compared to the $$$$$$$ one can sink into the systems, and conclude its not a risk they wanna take.

you can do whatever the hell you want man.

just dont expect me to sit here, and let you say its no big deal to use a tank thats been treated w/ copper.

i hate it when peoples tanks crash and they leave the hobby, frustrated, devistated and broke.

so i generally try and point out common causes of such, like copper.

Where did I tell anyone that? I stated MY tank was treated with copper. I believe I just posted this right before you didn't I? You like repeating me now?

Ya, you can't go FW to SW.. suuuuuure. Same tank in both pictures

you gotta lotta time on your hands, so dont take my word for it. "GOOGLE"

copper in reef tanks would probably suffice.

and i dont know how much time and money you sink into your tank, but in my case, i wouldnt EVEN chance copper contamination.

You are a weird one. Have you not read anything I wrote.

Lets get a recap.

I stated I used copper in my tank 13-14 years ago. 12 years ago I switched over the FOWLR. This process took a year because I went straight from FW-Brackish-SW without any teardown. From 12 years ago to 6 years ago it was FOWLR. No fish loss, I did return them to the LFS when I went reef. In 2002 I setup the same tank as a reef, this time I tore it down completely and put in live sand/rock, etc.

Show me ANY post that dates from 1996, when I went FOWLR, that states how bad copper is for a SW tank. There isn't any! Had I known at the time what I do now I would have NEVER used my tank.. but that information wasn't available. At the time LFS were selling FW ick meds for SW tanks due to lack of knowledge.

BTW, I have sunk over $13,500 into my tank now, just since going reef.. I keep track. And I spend about 5 mins a day in maint and an hour or 2 watching my tank.

DUDE IM TALKING ABOUT THIS THREAD ONLY.

the way you worded it made it seem like "its no big deal"

and not until i called you out on that did you suddenly then make it clear that it was 14 years ago.

i would have STILL bought a new tank.

and i would still suggest others would too.

you wanna keep throwin me sticks? cause im building quite the lil fire
