My new betta tank

Bettas prefer between 74 and 82 degrees, the exact temp in there varies a lot from betta to betta, as far as i can tell.

They can withstand a much larger range of temps, but don't do as well in them.

I keep mine at 76, he seems most active at that temp, and it works well for his tank mates.

It's very nice to see someone treating a betta properly, you have my congratulations! :)

Thanks for saying you like my tank you guys.
I'll probably turn down the heater. The temp right now is about 82 so I'll lower the temp tonight. I feel bad for the betta that are in vases or small bowls. Granted I use to keep my other bettas in a vase or betta bowls. But of course that was when I was in college and I didn't know much about bettas, or keeping a fish tank. :)
I was thinking of getting another type of fish in with him but then I decided not to since he looks so happy being the only fish in the tank. I might get a few ghost shrimps for the tank later though.

If you've got around 15 watts of fluorescent lighting over your 10g, live plants are a nice way to go.

But if you decide to go with fake ones, be careful about the sharp edges on plastic plants, as they tend to tear betta's delicate fins. Silk plants might be a safer way to go.

Love your blue betta. He's cute :)

Thanks Ms. Bubbles. I just have to name him lol.

I am glad to see another betta with some room. I believe 10G tanks are perfect for them.
Here is a pic of mine:

I'd really recommend some easy low light real plants over anything fake. I started out fake but real is just so much better. The whole tank chemistry seems more stable and i haven't had any algae in +6 months.
As you can see i even still have the ugly blue gravel i started out with (didn't want to put "Mr. Betta" through the stress of a gravel switch).

Hannys_Papa,

Your betta and your tank looks amazing. Hopefully I can get my tank looking at least half as good as yours. I got some betta bulbs from the petstore where I work. They have sprouted already. I put the bulbs in the clear plastic container near a window so I could get them to start growing. When the plants get a little better I put them in the tank. I've never had much luck with plants though. Hannys_Papa what kind of plants do you have in your tank?

There is:

Riccia fluitans (floating)
Water sprite
Sunset hygro
Dwarf sag
Corkscrew Val
Dwarf hairgrass
Java Fern
and a few tiny pieces of hornwort trying to survive somewhere. I don't know why but the stuff isn't growing for me.

I do not inject CO2 - just do 50% WC every 7-10 days and add some dry ferts i ordered from Greg Watson and 1-2 ml of flourish trace. I'd have to say i am really "slacking" when it comes to fertilizing. I just add some every now and then.

This tank is VERY low maintenance. No algae scraping, gravel vacs etc.
Just an hour for the water change and to trim the plants a bit - and then the occasional 5 minutes to add some ferts and of course feed the fish and snails (ramshorns, pond and MTS).

When i first had silk plants there was always some algae to scrape off the glass, decor to rearrange or clean (algae again), gravel to vac or filters to change.
FWIW - i just threw out the filter cartridge that filtered the tank without carbon for almost a year. Just rinsed it out with every water change.

Thats one of the advantages of having a planted tank with few fish.

Thanks for the advice Hannys_Papa.
I'll try to get some more plants for the tank. What do you feed your betta?
Right now I'm feeding him betta bites. I'll have to try and fins some palnt fertilizers for my plants. I did get some betta bulbs and they have sprouted. So I'm going to put them in the tank soon though.

I really only need the fertilizer because i have 40W of flourescent light over the tank so nitrate constantly bottoms out - and if i let that happen i'd probably get algae again or the plant growth suffers.

So i just add nitrate to keep the levels around 10ppm, some potassium and rarely phosphate. I also have to help with Ca and Mg because our water is so soft. But as i said - i just mainly dose after the water change and then just add a bit now and then as i see needed. Very simple.

The betta gets:
Hikari Betta Bio Gold (mini pellets)
Freeze dried bloodworms
Frozen brine shrimp
Frozen "Glassworms" (mosquito larvae).
Frozen Tubifex worms

I don't like to eat frosted flakes or cheerios every day - so i didn't want him to have just dry pellets - so every 2-3 days i add in one choice of the frozen stuff for variety. I have to say though he prefers frozen brine over anything else.

Hannys_Papa: a noobie question but how often do you waterchange/vaccume out the crap with your tank and is it a hassle with all those plants? I know the one betta doesn't make too much waste but...
