My Nothobranchius killifish Journal

Day 26

Moved the fry to there new homes last night , and made a big mistake I forgot to cover the filter intakes with a prefilter and lost around 14 Rachovii Berira 98 fry and 5 Foerschi fry, so i covered the intakes with sponge blocks and then just to find out the fry are getting down between the sponge and glass wall of the tank and dying, so i angled the sponge blocks so only the corner of the sponge was touching the glass that seems to work for now .
The N. Eggersi Red fry are fine have 11 of them in the tank i did not add them until later.

The N. Patrizii eggs never did hatch and i only got 1 N. Guenther and 1 N. Patrizii at this time so not sure what i am doing with them.

So the count right now is

1. 8 - Rachovii Berira 98
2. 1 - N. Patrizii
3. 0 - Palmquisti
4. 11 - N. Eggersi Red
5. 12 - Foerschi
6. 1 N. Guenther

Not to happy now with my results but it is my first try and i well do it again , I am hoping for a couple good adult fish now so i can harvest there eggs and get them to hatch

I well get some pics soon

Sorry to hear about the loss. But i got to admit i always wanted to order the killi eggs off ebay and never did, till i started following your post.I ordered them on aug 16th and waiting or them to come in.I already have some gardneri killifish and get some fry every once in awhile. The first two times i did i made a few mistakes and they died, but this last time i got 6 and they are doing ok.Good luck and keep posting.

Thanks M8

I still think I am doing OK for my first time trying something like this , next time i well do better :)

Pics are still on the way , I am very busy now and no time for pics but very soon

Question for you. When you received your order of killi eggs were they all in the same container or each in there own container.I ordered some and all six kinds came mixed in one container.Which makes things a little more difficult when hatching and raising them.

Mine where in 6 containers and labeled with names and hatching dates . Did they come with a hatching date ? . You well have no problem separating the males from the mixed lot but the females are going to be hard they are more silver in color and kinda look the same

I well update with some pic in next day or two , I am very busy with my work and new fish room :)

here is the info sheet i used when hatching and rasing my killies

I never added any salt to my fry water , and they are still without salt now i am going to add some in the next week or two, my plan is to add 1/2 teaspoon per gallon and when i put them in the breeding tanks it well be 1 teaspoon per gallon , The reason for this is my main tanks are planted and i dont want to kill the plants with to much salt and maybe it wont hurt but to be sure i well keep the salt low.

And maybe i wont use any salt in the main tanks i am going to watch them and see how they do

The salt will kill some plants. I only put a little over 1 tsp. for 10 gallons and every water change. It killed off some plants. Experiment with small samples of plants before. Salt is good for them when breeding if you have multiple males that may fight. My nothos started dying off if I didn't add salt so you may have a different experience. Good luck in breeding them and would love to see photos soon :).

Ok after 100 pics only 2 i got worth looking at are the Rachovii beira 98

they are just so fast and dont like getting there pics taken :) I well try again
