Ok, so here it is, my first post. I'll try to explain my pond cause my computer hates it when I try to upload pictures to websites. Stupid puter!

I have a 150 gal triangularish pond with 11 goldfish in it and 1 koi (no barbels so not a koi?) This is what I call the "sweet spot" These fish go at it like crazy! I think I've had atleast a dozen batches of eggs and you know I can't ignore them so this brings me to the next phase...

Out front I have a half whisky barrel with a liner of course. I put whatever the fish laid eggs on in here to hatch... I have my pump in a 20 oz bottle with holes and a nylon stocking on top. This keeps anyone from getting sucked up. Works well too! On to Phase 3...

I have a 5 gal. tank inside (for my daughter) that i've put some babies in. I needed extra room... Around the filter intake I have a kids juice bottle with holes and a nylon stocking over it. yes, it works! lol! Phase 4...

I put some of the bigger fry in the top of the big pond which is maybe a 10 gal liner that overflows into the big pond. I fashoned a guard out of centimeter square wire screen with window screen over top to keep the babies out of the big pond. I don't want them to become lunch.

Anyways, I'm running out of room for babies and the fish won't stop laying eggs! Crazy fish! I'm seriously thinking about "borrowing" my daughter's wading pool and putting some fry in it with a bubbler (airator?)

Anyways you guys will think I'm crazy cause when I clean the ponds out... get this... I don't put anything in the water. No dechlorinator, nothing. I fill up a kitchen trash can (never used for trash) throw the fish in there, drain the pond, scrub it, fill it back up and throw the fish back in.

It doesn't seem to bother the fish, they do swim around angrily for a bit, but get over it when i feed them.

Anyways, I'll post pics when the computer lets me.

Well water or City?
Also...just start ignoring the eggs and let nature run it's course. They will either get eaten up, hatch and eaten up, not hatch and rot...or..hatch and the strong will survive.

OR....you could continue your harvest and donate them to your LFS (local fish store) maybe get store credit. (know that if they are common goldies they will probably end up in the feeder tank)

Just suggestions..
Can't wait to see pics.

Welcome to the site! Lots of great info to be had.

Here's the overflow section

Here's the Whiskey Barrel... Oh yeah, the wire thing serves 2 purposes... 1 to slow down the water and 2 incase any small animals or birds fall in they can climb out. We've had casualties in the past... birds, a chipmunk, and a mole...

Here's my daughter's tank inside... I know, plastic plants bad, but the fish will only be in here a short time... then they move to the overflow.

Also, we have city water, but from what I've been told, it's the best water in the area.

:welcome: to AC!

Could you please post a picture of this "koi" with no barbels? Koi have barbels. You may have a koi with damaged barbels or possibly genetic defect or a hybrid of koi/goldfish. See Iris' black hybrid, Sygnus and more details about hybrids below.

You can kinda see it in the second pic, it's the only multicolored fish I have. was told it was a koi when i bought it.

When I first moved into my house, I didn't know the first thing about ponds...or aquariums for that matter. We did just what you did and just topped it off with a garden hose. Only after I moved them inside for the winter did I find out about treating your water, cycling a tank and numerous other things. I'm supprised they didn't all die on me. Anyways, they are much happier now and are constantly "egging" my tanks. I only saved about 21 out of the first batch. Some of those will be moved out to the pond after I fix my waterfall.

Nice pics! I like your set up.

I wish I had a pond! I like the way its set up! Interesting way of dividing the pond for the younger ones!
