Hi all!! Hope everyone is looking forward to a great weekend!!

My question: I have a Cairn terrier, Oscar, and we have had a heck of a time getting his hair to stop tangling. Cairns have hair like ours, they don't shed much and he is so active and hyper that he tangles his hair like crazy. Basically, for those unfamiliar with the breed, he is a dog like Toto from the Wizard of Oz, but he is wheaton, not black. SO, can I use a conditioner like for human hair in his hair? I can't find a dog conditioner that works:help:. Any suggestions? Here is a pic of him and my Jack, Sage! Also, my brother's ex girlfriend's baby boston.

I use mane and tail conditioner on mine, it seems to work really well. Human conditioner is the wrong PH and will just make it more apt to tangle.

I have one just like yours and you are never supposed to use any kind of conditioner on their hair. They are a wire hair breed.

What might be your problem is even though they don't shed, their hair goes through a cycle. It causes a blowed coat. In essence, the hair is beginning to die, it just doesn't shed. The solution is you do what is called stripping the coat.

Stripping involves, for lack of a better word, plucking the dead hair from the coat. It sounds awful but it does not hurt the dog. You can look this up on the Internet and there are some pictures of how to do it.

Hope this helps. The procedure is usually done at least once on year. Hope this helps.

I was going to suggest the same. Its a reasonably priced horse shampoo, but it can be used on dogs, humans ect!..

Maybe use Johnson and Johnson No More Tears detangler, it's made for kids so I'd imagine it'd be more gentle than any other conditioner.

I brush him once a week after his bath, but it still tangles up; he likes to do the roll/squirmy thing lol I have to try something, I feel bad brushing his mats out because I know it hurts him. Maybe I just need to brush him once a day!! I know all about the stripping, and the wire hair, but I have taken him to a groomer who doesn't know why his hair is tangling and matting like that. I am going to try mane and tail or children's detangler or something-- he just won't stay clean and detangled. lol Thanks for the advice guys!!!!
