MY Red Cherry Shrimp Arrived!

The moss should come bacck, i wouldn't worry about increasing lights. And the shrimp are probably more subdued because they are not as hungry as when they arrived :)

btw i got that moss wall mesh design from you :D. I poured a ton of work into it, too. I was afraid the holes in the mesh were too small for the moss so I got my utility knife and did some detailing to make the holes bigger...I also lashed the 8 suction cups to the back sheet of mesh with nylon thread. Finally one edge of the whole thing was bound together with the same thread to make sort of a hinge.

You probably can't tell from my yammering but I love DIY projects :woot:

That's a lot of holes to cut. But the strands of java moss are able to pass through the little holes with no problem. Nice shrimp tank!

I love the idea of that moss wall. One of my next projects is a shrimp tank so I'm taking notes. I guess you bought that grid at a craft store? And don't worry about the java moss. Java moss can grow under a night light bulb (just kidding but I'm not far off).

Yeah I had to do quite a bit of hunting to find it as I try to avoid walmart as much as possible. I found it under the knitting section at a Michaels (likely at any other craft store too). This one's labeled QuickCount plastic canvas. I've seen people do this with window screens too (available at hardware stores).

As a side note, msjinkzd has said that for shrimp tanks there's no need for the suction cups but if you have fish (i did for a little bit), you'll want the cups to protect the fish from getting trapped. Oh, and dont try to use silicone to attach the suction cups to the mesh, I found out the hard way that it doesn't stay very well. I just used nylon thread and a needle (or fishing line). Sheesh, I should stick a dedicated to page in front of this book I'm writing. I'm sure you can find plenty of DIY moss wall guides on these forums or google :p

Best of luck!

That is a nice start there! I had a hard time finding the heater, which obviously means you did a good job. :) I am curious to see how the moss wall comes along with the bigger holes.

As far as light goes, I have discovered that light IS important but if it is not balanced with ferts & co2 it is wasted (and vice versa) & can cause more damage than good (algae!!). I would get some more light of course but in a low light tank 1.5wpg is not unheard of, it does limit your plant selection some though.

Msjinkzd is great, very helpful! She is the reason I have a shrimp tank right now (and who knows how many other tanks she is responsible for). I also constructed my moss wall from her lead. :)

you know, if only they sold light bulbs with adjustable wattage, I could just turn a knob to see how much wattage I can beam into the tank without ferts or CO2 and not get algae. *dreams on*

thanks hehe I'm playing the waiting game with the plants and I think they're winning >.>

Shrimp seem to be chuggin along just fine though, there's nothing sweeter than boring stable parameters :grinyes:
