my whimsical goldfish tank

I heard about this when you were just in the concept stage, i think, and it sounded like an interesting idea. Now that i see it, it's much, much cooler than i ever thought it could be. This is definitely the most interesting "bare bottom" tank I've ever seen.

I think for your next one, you might be better off spreading a thin layer of aquarium silicone over say, one square foot of the back, and laying down your tile, then moving on to the next square foot. You'd have to let the tank dry on its back, but then you wouldn't have to worry about algae getting behind the tiles, as it would all be one piece. Just an idea.

It sure looks nice with Jack's bright contrasting colors. This is really very cool. Nice work.

As for decor, I'm thinking get some of those titanium sporks from ThinkGeek toys, and silicone a small forest of titanium sporks to the bottom? :D Could be cool. With a slower moving goldfish like Jack, I don't see a problem.

Titanium sporks???

Smbjedi, I finally found the right teacups today for plants, a trio of painted mugs in just the right shades of green, blue and orange. I got three amazon swords and some bright blue gravel to plant them in. Bright blue gravel, I never thought I'd buy any, but it looks great in this setting and Jack is having a good time picking at the gravel and swimming through the leaves.

Pictures tomorrow.

When I move him up to the corner tank-I'm thinking probably sometime this winter, I'll try flaringshutter's suggestion of spreading a foot's worth of silicone at a time. Still no problem with algae behind the tiles, but I think it could happen.

I want to get a corner tank, big enough for two fancies-36 or, if there is such a thing, 45 gallon. I saw a black ranchu at a fish shop and fell in love. But there is not enough room in the 20 for two.

BTW, how is that pronounced? Ran-chew? Rang-koo? Or something else?

When I move Jack on to a bigger tank I think dalmation mollies and/or swordtails would show up nicely in this one.

where are the update pics?

That is a really interesting idea. I predict... a cartoon tank full blood parrots with three tanks stacked like this ____

and maybe a few vintage toys...

This is the coolest thing ever! I've been trying to figure out a way to give my tank a creative/artistic look to go with my creative/artistic personally...although maybe I'm not so creative since I didn't come up with this idea first haha. I want to do one like this but I'd have black gravel on the bottom and maybe some marbles or something to compliment the colors in the tiles. Maybe you could use a sheet of plexi-glass, spread the sealant on it, place tiles, and have a full sheet of sealed tiles then take some sealant and seal it aroun the edges of the back of the tank just like you do a regular background. I've thought about doing that with a completed puzzle before which would have to somehow go on the back of the tank instead of inside the tank for obvious reasons.

I was thinking....do you think the glare from the lights hitting the glass tiles on the floor would be too much for the fish's eyes? Also I was thinking for the plants you could make planter boxes out of plexi-glass and seal them into the tank, place tiles around the planters, and inside put the standard fishtank gravel along with either fake plants or real plants.
