Nandopsis salvini

hehe im the one with the camera, and i think when she gets ahold of it, paybacks a... well ya know :)

Salvini's can be very very nasty. When they claim an area it is usually a large one and they will do serious damage to anything that comes into this area. They almost seem to enjoy the torment they inflict.

This comes from my experience with them. I have seen them kill many different species of tankmates. Then in one instance my dominant 6 inch male was brought back to the store for a trade. They threw him in with a dominant 9 inch male texas that was also killing his tankmates. The third morning that the store opened. My salvini had not only killed the texas the night before but had eaten half of it also.

That fellow was the nastiest fish of the bunch that I owned and probably the meanest fish that I ever owned. The others were pretty bad too.

They start off fine but as they grow they get more and more pushy, until they have terrorized every other fish that it can push around. The ones that tend to fight back will usually fair better, but the salvini is relentless.

Certainly not a fish to go with most of your list caz.

They are beautiful fish , I haven't experienced them being aggressive or violent however they haven't fared well in my tanks - a bit tender perhaps or maybe it was a weak strain.

They tended to like a lot of caves and pick at a variety of smaller foods since they have smaller mouths.
I believe that if you have adequate space and lots of structure you can curb the aggression of most fish - introducing them while young also helps.

A lot of aggression depends on the individual fish and the care it receives - just look at dogs.

According to the latest reclassification by Kullander the genus Nandopsis is reserved for the haiti and cuban cichlids while the salvini is back in the cichlosoma while awaiting future assignment.
