i was thinking about starting up a 5 gallon nano reef. walmart sells a 5 gallon hex system, for 20 bucks. its basically the same thing as an eclipse system. i would need to upgrade the lighting, anyone have any suggestions?

Does it come with an incandescent light? You could look into the PC screw in bulbs--they are really nice. I have a pair on my 10, and everything is thriving in there (everything the camels leave alone--those buggers are coming out soon).

Yep--compact fluorescents, with a built in ballast, that run in incandescent sockets are great. Not too pricy, come in 10,000K and 50/50, give you about 13W each. I'm really happy with mine.

cool, i might look into that. i know that i have screw in ballasts on my ten gallon tank. where do i pick up lights like that?

My LFS carries them, as does Dr Foster and Smith, and petsolutions. I've seen the 10,000K at WalMart, but not the 50/50's.

No, the incandescents don't offer the right spectrum of light for corals (or plants). Fine for FO, but won't work for reef organisms. That's why I'd get the PC screw in bulbs--they'll run in the same, cheaper hood, but actually give off the beneficial light spectrum needed, and run much cooler than incandescents.

okay, i found some at liveaquaria.com, and im gonna try and order some, if my lfs doesnt have any. i think i might actually lean towards a 10 gallon, if i cant find a cheaper 5 gallon, the one that was on sale for $29, is now $40 :argh

what types of corals do you keep in your ten gallon orion girl? i want to be able to put this on my computer desk, will it be too heavy? or should i just buy a small stand for it?
