I've been keeping aquariums for many, many years and I can say without reservation that my native tank has been by far the most enjoyable. I've had one for less than a year (8 months) and have seen my 5 Longear Sunfish grow from unremarkable fry to 2" vibrantly colored beauties. As they mature they will become even more spectacular. (see my avatar)
They do not require any special setup, and don't even need a heater They have been eating flake, frozen and pellet food. I've got some gravel, larger rocks and some plants. This very natural looking tank looks great in my living room. People are always remarking how nice it looks.
They also have a great personality. All 5 will line up everytime I approach the tank and vie for my attention. You can either catch your own stock or buy them very cheaply. Although not readily available in many LFSs, try stopping into a baitshop and you'll be surprised what you can find for half a dollar.
