Need cleaning ideas for my new used tank!

Bleach in fish tank ! ! !

Folks:

My "knee jerk" reaction to eliminating pathogens and parasites is to use a mild chlorine solution in hot water (mild = can bearly detect the chlorine odor), employ a 24 hour detention time and then rinse thoroughly.......

TR

I bet I could toss a couple cups of bleach in a 10 g tank, then put in some of my "magic powder" and then add fish, no problem.

This magic powder can be used mixed in water to kill the chlorine residue after cleaning an old tank, or even de-chlorinate your tap water.

What is this magic powder?

Sodium Bicarbonate, yes baking soda..

The result of Chlorine & Sodium Bicarbonate soda is salt water (with CO2 & O2)

Sodium Bicarbonate = NaHCO3
or
Sodium = Na
Carbon = C
Hydrogen = H
Oxygen = O (x3)

Chlorine = Cl

remix into

NaCl = Salt
H20 = Water
CO2 = Carbon Dioxide
O2 = Oxygen

take 4 NaHCO3 & 4 Cl

result in

4 x NaCl
4 x CO2
2 x H2O
1 x O2

A trick not to try at home
- in theory, one could mix bleach & baking soda & drink it

Man I need :help:

If you got a lot of Chlorine, you might be making a lot of salt...

The rest seem harmless enough...Carbon Dioxide, Water and Oxygen. The problem is you'd probably NEVER mix your Baking soda equally with the Chlorine, so you'll always have either too much Baking Soda (which will cause PH issues iirc), or not enough (leaving harmful Chlorine in your tank).

Not the best idea, IMO.

Point being, after bleach, rinse with water & Baking soda, then plain water.
