Need filter help asap!!!

I'm going to kill myself.

Okay. Maybe I SHOULD give up on these Fluval filters. I had the thing running all afternoon and I was so happy, because it literally took me DAYS to get it going.

Then later that night I started planting the tank and I don't know what happened - maybe I bumped the intake hose or something), but it completely stopped working again. The motor is still churning away, but nothing comes out of the return hose. I tried all the tricks that initially got it going for me, but now it's not working at all.

I was so upset I nearly burst into tears last night. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, i had this problem with one of my filters the only way i managed to get over it was to empty the filter and the hoses. Then make sure the intake hose was submerged under the water, turn on the filter take the outlet pipe and suck for all i was worth. As for the hight between filter and tank if the filter is too low the pump has to work overtime to pump the water back to the tank but all my filters are at least 24" below the tank and work fine. As for your filter stopping after working for a while, Check all your pipe connections for leaks also check the seals on the filter sounds like you may have air entering the system sumhow. Hope this helps:)

Thanks a lot Steve, I will try that when I get home tonight. This is my first cannister filter and I got it used and with no instructions, so it's been a real nightmare for me.

Anyways, I appreciate your help. I will try out what you said.
Other suggestions/instructions are BEYOND welcome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One suggestion might be to cut your pipe that comes from your tank.

Steal the hand pump part from a siphon kit and use that to kick off pumping water from the tank.

Ha ha ha, I don't think I'm skilled enough to do something like that without ruining it forever.

Why should my cannister be empty when I'm starting? Just curious, I thought that the more water that was in there, the easier it would be to start. Can someone explain?

Okay!!! I got it!!!

You guys were right! Not only does the tank have to be full but also the filter needs to start out empty! I emptied it right out and hooked it back up and it started immediately!

Thank god, I almost lost it on that one!

Thanks for all your help guys!
