I have been having trouble with my Fluval 404 filter. To be honest I haven't been too impressed with it since the day I got it. It has been on my tank for at least 9 years. Over the last couple of months it works fine for awhile then all of a sudden it will stop. Not sure but it may be caused to power failures we have been having. ERRR. Anyway, Since it has been nothing but trouble anyway I am wanting to change to a different filter.

Thankfully, I also have a emperor 400 on my 125 gal as well. I have had the emperor for 10-12 years give or take a couple of years. Never once had any trouble with it. Only complaint I have is that it is sometimes difficult to prime.

I am wanting to purchase a second filter for the tank. Don't think I want a HOB. I am thinking about the Marineland Multistage Canister Filters. I don't want to spend that kind of money on a product before I know how it performs. Anyone using this? Any other filter suggestions that I should look into? I can't really afford the super expensive ones. Needs to be budget friendly.

I just found this one http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+3579+19310&pcatid=19310. Looks like this is a new one. I have never seen it before. Looks promising. What do you think?

I like the cascade canisters.. Not expensive. I have one, and have ordered another for one of my other tanks.. Some models filters will inter change with other models. Like the 700 and 1000 or the 1200 and 1500 models..

For a tank your size the 1200 will work. Its rated up too 150 gallons. But the 1500 is rated up to 200 gallons and about 20-30 dollars more. May be worth it for extra filter power.

Drs Foster and Smith don't carry them. But Pet solution does.

i also like the penn plax cascade canisters i have a 1000 model and it works perfect and is so silent i cant hear it running. i will buy more cascades in the future. i also like the magnum 350 canister filter i have 8 of them running and 4 hot magnums and a old magnum 220 and never have any trouble with them.

Thanks I will check into those. I was trying to use DrsF&S since that is where my gift certificate is from.

I just don't want to buy another piece of crap, IMO. I would never buy another fluval. Perhaps they are better now. But I still rather not chance it.

I am sold on all Marineland Magnum series canisters. I have 25 of the 350s running and about a dozen of the C series. Have only had to do one motor replacement on a 20 yr old 350.

The new C series are the quietest filter I have ever experienced. The quick release connection is a nice feature, and is extremely tight seating. A great filter.

I've heard mixed reviews on the cascade, I'd rather go with maybe 2 Rena XP3's or 2 C-360s, which would probably be cheaper than a single C-530.

And your right weezer, they do seem to be cheaper at Kens, almost makes me wish I had an XP2 now. Though I would miss the micron filtration that my Magnum offers, heh.
