Need Help with High Nitrite Levels

10 ppm of NO3

10 ppm of NO3 is not that bad
you could add some FAST growing cheap plants
this will lower your nitrates

but you will need to increase you light cycle
to 10 to 12 hrs a day (for the plants)

how does the salt help the tank, i just started a tank and haven't added the salt. is it a necessity or a last resort. thanks

If your in the middle of a fishy cycle and have high Nitrites, a little salt can be good for the fish. Nitrite interferes with the fish's ability to takeup oxygen. Salt will block the nitrite and allow the blood to carry oxygen in its normal fashion.

A little goes a long way and its not necessary for a normal freshwater tank that has a normally functioning biofilter. Its good, in small doses, if you have high nitrites and are having trouble clearing them with water changes.

I just reread this and noticed it was NITRITE not nitrate
sorry I was wrong
